I have been handling bearing replacement orders for eight years, and I have personally made enough buying mistakes to fill a small filing cabinet. I keep the log because every mistake still has a part number attached to it.
Here is my unpopular opinion: Koyo bearings are excellent, but 'excellent' is not a specification. If you order by brand name alone, you are not buying a bearing. You are buying a guessing game, and the person making the guess is not the one who pays when it fails.
First Mistake: 'Koyo Needle Bearing' Is Not Enough
When I first started in maintenance procurement, I assumed the lowest quote was the best quote. I thought a bearing is a bearing, and a brand name meant the part was right. Then came July 2017.
I ordered 'Koyo needle bearing' for a gearbox. I did not specify the series, the cage type, or whether it needed an inner ring. The quote came back cheap, and I approved it. What arrived was a drawn-cup needle roller bearing. The application needed a machined-ring needle bearing with an inner ring. It fit the bore, but it could not handle the shaft load. The gearbox got noisy in testing, and we had to pull the whole assembly.
That mistake cost roughly $890 in rework and a one-week delay. The vendor did not do anything wrong. I gave them a vague description, and they filled in the blanks with the cheapest option. That is a transparency lesson, not a supplier horror story.
Koyo needle bearings come in several families: drawn-cup, solid, with inner ring, without inner ring. Codes like NA and RNA mean different things. If you write 'Koyo needle bearing,' you have outsourced a design decision. According to ISO 15, radial bearings have standardized boundary dimensions. That is why the bore, outside diameter, and width of a 6205 are the same across brands. But cage material, internal clearance, tolerance class, and end cover design are not contained in the brand name.

Koyo tapered roller bearings taught me the next lesson. A tapered roller bearing is actually a matched set: the cone, the cup, and the rollers. If you order 'one Koyo tapered roller bearing,' you might receive only the cone or only the cup. Some catalogs list the complete assembly, but not every supplier assumes you know that.
In January 2019, I ordered a Koyo tapered roller bearing for a conveyor drive. The part number on our list was 32206. I assumed I was buying the complete bearing. The quote came back, I approved it, and we received six cones and no cups. The cups had to be expedited, adding $312 in freight. My error: I did not write 'assembly,' and I did not check the line item.
ISO 355 covers boundary dimensions for tapered roller bearings, but the cone and cup are still matched components. If the part number on your old drawing does not say 'set,' ask before ordering.
Dodge Pillow Block Bearings: The Name That Looks Like a Part Number
In March 2022, a plant engineer asked for 'Dodge pillow block bearing, 1-7/16 inch.' That sounds specific, but it is not. Dodge pillow block bearings have been made in dozens of housing styles and insert variations for that shaft size. The insert might use set screw locking or an eccentric collar. The housing might have a different height, bolt spacing, or centerline location. The bearing number stamped on the old insert answers all of that.
We asked for the bearing number stamped on the old insert. It took one phone call. If we had ordered from the description, we probably would have received the wrong collar style and scored the shaft.
I am not criticizing Dodge pillow block bearings. They are common in many plants. I am criticizing the assumption that a brand name plus a shaft size is enough.
A Crankshaft Thrust Bearing Is Not a Normal Bearing Order
Then there is the crankshaft thrust bearing. The name hides the geometry.
A crankshaft thrust bearing is usually a main bearing half with integral thrust flanges that control crankshaft end play. It has a journal size, a bearing width, a flange thickness, and an upper or lower orientation. If you order by engine model alone, you might get the correct journal diameter but the wrong flange width.
In June 2023, I ordered a set based on the engine model, not the OEM part number. The bearing fit on the journal, but the end play was too high. We had to disassemble the lower end twice. The replacement parts were $700; the labor was more.
What Size Is an LM8LUU Linear Bearing? Answer: 8 x 15 x 35 mm
Here is the direct answer for the design file: LM8LUU is a long-type linear ball bushing with an 8 mm bore, 15 mm outer diameter, and 35 mm length. The regular LM8UU is 8 x 15 x 24 mm. The L means long.
I know this because I once ordered LM8UU when the drawing called for LM8LUU. The carriage had more moment load than expected, and the bearing tilted. It did not fail immediately, but it left a groove in the shaft. The fix cost a new shaft and the correct bushing, $243 plus two weeks of design rework.
So when someone asks what size is LM8LUU linear bearing, the answer is 8 mm bore, 15 mm OD, 35 mm length. But the better question is what tolerance, shaft hardness, and installation fit the application needs. Those are not included in the name.
The Real Fix: Ask for the Whole Number and the Whole Price
When I started requesting full specifications, the first vendor asked me: 'What is not included?' I learned to ask that before asking the price. Because the lowest quote is only the lowest quote if the line items match.
Here is the transparency rule I now use: every bearing order should list the brand, the exact part number, the bearing type, the dimensions, the quantity, the country of manufacture, the cage and clearance codes, and the freight. If a supplier says 'equivalent' without saying equivalent to what, I politely move on.
The vendor who lists all fees upfront, even if the total looks higher, usually costs less in the end.
I am not saying you need to know every bearing code by heart. I am saying you need a system that forces the question before the purchase order, not after the bearing fails.
But the Machine Is Down
The objection I always hear is: 'We do not have time to check part numbers when a line is down.' I get it. But I have also seen the same machine go down twice because someone ordered a replacement by memory.
In the last 18 months, our team's pre-order checklist has caught 47 potential errors. That is 47 failed orders that did not happen. Most were small: a wrong length, a missing cup, an incorrect collar. But each one would have caused another shutdown.
So here is where I land: Koyo bearings are an excellent choice, and the brand name matters. But brand names do not carry loads. Part numbers, dimensions, tolerances, and honest quotes do. If a supplier is transparent about what they are offering and what it will really cost, that is worth more than a low number that guesses the rest.
